A camera can show a live image while the system still has a serious fault: missing recordings, a failing hard drive, unstable PoE, time drift or remote access that no longer works. CCTV maintenance should therefore test cameras, infrastructure and recorded evidence as one chain.

Inspect camera image and physical condition

Check focus, lens cleanliness, mounting stability, housing condition and the actual field of view. Compare the current angle with the area the camera is supposed to cover. For outdoor cameras, look for damaged seals, exposed connectors, water paths and dust that can reduce image quality.

Test night and low-light performance

Review night images rather than assuming infrared is working because it switches on. Reflections from walls, dirty domes, strong lights and overexposed entrances can make footage unusable. Check important cameras during the conditions in which incidents are most likely to be reviewed.

Check power, PoE and cabling

Intermittent camera loss often starts with power or cabling. Inspect connectors, patch leads, power supplies and PoE switch ports. For IP systems, review port stability and PoE capacity; for analog systems, check video and power connections. Repeated disconnections should be diagnosed before replacing the camera.

Inspect NVR/DVR and hard drives

Review recorder health, disk warnings, channel status and storage usage. Confirm that overwriting works as intended and that the actual retention period matches the site requirement. A drive warning should not be ignored simply because current playback still works.

Verify playback and export

Select footage from different days and cameras, play it back and export a short sample. This confirms that recordings are really retrievable. Check date and time while reviewing footage because incorrect timestamps can make evidence difficult to match with an event.

Test remote viewing and account access

Verify the approved mobile or remote access method without changing ownership unnecessarily. Confirm which user accounts are authorized and document any changes. If the service fails, diagnose internet, DNS/P2P status, firewall or device settings instead of resetting everything as the first step.

Document recurring faults

Record which camera or channel failed, what was tested, the cause found and the result after repair. Repeated faults at the same point may indicate a cable, power or environmental problem rather than several defective cameras.

When is preventive maintenance useful?

Sites with many cameras, harsh outdoor conditions, critical security coverage or previous recurring faults benefit from scheduled checks. The interval should reflect the site risk and environment rather than a fixed rule for every customer.

Summary

Good CCTV maintenance proves that images are useful, recordings are retrievable, storage is healthy and network or power paths are stable. The result should be documented so future faults can be compared with previous findings.
